NHLS (National Health Laboratory Service) Profile
The National Health Laboratory Service, or commonly shortened to the NHLS, is an established institution located in South Africa that focuses on multiple health departments in the nation. Since its formation in 2001, the NHLS was originally a merger between two accredited institutions, which are the National Centre for Occupational Health, the National Institute for Virology, as well as the South African Institute for Medical Research. Besides putting their central focus onto healthcare, the NHLS is also in charge of pathology laboratories that are set up in a number of South African universities. In total, NHLS has accommodated more than 265 laboratories, including the ones in public hospitals and clinics.

The NHLS dedicates themselves to providing cheaper accessibility to their health laboratory services, but still retain its upmost quality. Their services are used by more than 80% of the total South African population. In addition, the NHLS has tackled on other departments, such as Production of Sera for Anti-Snake Venom and Diagnostic Laboratory Services. But all their activities come from extensive research. In order to constantly push the boundaries with their healthcare activities, the NHLS provides support for health research, as well as provide the necessary training in Health Science Education. Under the responsible hands of 7 000 employees, the NHLS is able to prosper as a governmental institution.

About NHLS (National Health Laboratory Service) Internships 2021-2022
The National Health Laboratory Services is giving out multiple internship positions for those who are passionate in the field of Medical or Clinical Pathology. The NHLS Internships is a programme designed to turn knowledgeable students into full-fledged Intern Medical Scientists (Grade TC1). Upon successful acceptance into the programme, interns are required to agree to a 2-year contract that will bind them together with the establishment. Only then will you be able to receive the beneficial working exposure under a real-time laboratory setting.

Throughout the entire NHLS Internship, participants will be entitled to an allowance which will support them throughout the entire journey. The amount differs from one qualification to another, as listed below:

  • R126 858 for NQF 8,
  • R160 222 for NQF 9
  • R193 584 NFQ 10

NHLS (National Health Laboratory Service) Internship Requirements
The NHLS Internship requires all incoming candidates to adhere to their extensive eligibility criteria. Each of these items will be used by the selection committee to evaluate their candidates on a fair manner. Fulfilling these requirements will also give you an upper edge during the registration period. Failure to meet everything might get you disregarded by the committee instead. Be sure to jot down all of these requested items.

The NHLS Internship Requirements are:

  • Pursuing a 4-year BSc Degree or Honours Degree
  • Studying towards the Medical/Clinical Pathology course
  • Has a strong understanding in technical aspects
  • Keen eye for details
  • Able to work with other team members
  • Can withstand pressure during working and sociable hours
  • Has an understanding in computer literacy
  • Optional, but advantageous: displays knowledge in laboratory information system.

Candidates who have met the requirements above can immediately register for the NHLS Internship. To begin your registration, visit the Official NHLS Careers Portal. Candidates must take a look at whether the programme is available for applications or not. This is due to the fact that the availability status of the internship differs from one time period to another.

If the NHLS Internship is open for registration right now, you can immediately send in your applications to the programme. Additionally, you will need to prepare these documents below:

  • Your most updated Curriculum Vitae (not exceeding two pages)
  • Identity Document
  • Available qualifications
  • Recent academic transcripts.

Announcements will only be delivered to candidates that have passed the registration. Should you not hear back any word from the NHLS within 2 months past the application deadline, we regret to inform you that you have not been selected for the internship.

Important Notes

Applications must be fully completed, including the documents attached to your dossier. Candidates sending in incomplete applications will automatically be disqualified from the registration procedure

Make sure that you put in the appropriate Reference Number and Job Title onto your application dossiers

Shortlisted candidates are subjected to more extensive assessments. These includes a pre-employment screening, qualification checks, reference checks, criminal checks, ITC, and psychometric assessments
